Yahoo to stop user access of its services via Facebook, Google IDs

Yahoo Inc will stop letting consumers access its various online services, including Fantasy Sports and photo-sharing site Flickr, by signing-in with their Facebook Inc or Google Inc credentials.

The change, which will be rolled out gradually according to a Yahoo spokeswoman, will require users to register for a Yahoo ID in order to use any of the Internet portal's services.

The move marks the latest change to Yahoo by Chief Executive Marissa Mayer, who is striving to spark fresh interest in the company's Web products and to revive its stagnant revenue.

"Yahoo is continually working on improving the user experience," the company said in a statement, noting that the new process "will allow us to offer the best personalized experience to everyone".

The first Yahoo service to require the new sign-in process is Yahoo Sports Tourney Pick'Em, a service focused on the NCAA college basketball tournament which begins later this month. News of the change to Yahoo's Tourney Pick'Em sign-in process was first reported by the technology blog Betanews.

Since Mayer took the reins in 2012, the company has rolled out new versions of many of its key products, including Yahoo Mail and Yahoo Finance. Last year, Yahoo announced a program to recycle inactive Yahoo user IDs, letting new users claim email addresses that have not been used for more than 12 months.

In eliminating the Facebook and Google sign-in features, Mayer, a former Google executive, is effectively reversing a strategy that Yahoo adopted in 2010 and 2011 under then CEO Carol Bartz.

The change to the Tourney Pick'Em sign-in process began on Monday, the Yahoo spokeswoman said, noting that users could still access other services with Google or Facebook IDs.

The sign-in buttons for Facebook and Google will eventually be removed from all Yahoo properties, the Yahoo spokeswoman, though she declined to provide a time frame.

Sony Xperia Z2

I typically have headphones on when I'm home in New York, whether it's during a jog or a commute. I often crank the volume up, at the risk of hearing loss, so that I could hear my favorite podcasts over loud subways and honking cars.I was excited to see noise-cancelling technology in Sony's new Xperia Z2 smartphone. I've resisted investing in pricey noise-cancelling sets because I'm prone to lose or break them. If it's going to be built into a phone, perhaps I can use that instead of my iPod.
Alas, I find the new feature to be more promise than practical, based on the brief time I had with the phone at this week's Mobile World Congress wireless show in Barcelona, Spain.
But first, I'll go through other features that may appeal to some people. The phone is due to come out in March. Sony hasn't announced a price, though its phones typically sell for $500 to $600 in the U.S. without subsidies or a contract.
Waterproof
Sony's smartphones are distinctive in being waterproof. It's not something I've felt that I've needed, but you might find it useful if you work as a lifeguard or live near a beach.
20.7-meagpixel camera
That's even better than the 16 megapixels in Samsung's new Galaxy S5. But lens quality and the focus mechanism are also important. I didn't get to try out the Z2's camera, but it's the same one in the Xperia Z1s, which I've had mixed results with.
4K video recording
It's impressive that the phone can capture video with four times the details as full high-definition video. But 4K displays are still expensive, so you won't appreciate the extra sharpness for a while. It's more for people who want to take quality video now for the day 4K becomes more common.
Now, back to the noise. The phone analyzes ambient noise and produces a countering signal. In simple terms, if the noise is a 7, the phone subtracts 7 to bring it to zero. If the noise is a 5, the phone subtracts 5.
Unfortunately, it requires special in-ear headphones, which Sony is selling for 60 euros ($82). A sensor in the earpiece detects the noise, so the phone knows what countering signal to send. This approach keeps the headphones smaller and cheaper than typical noise-cancelling headphones.
Noise cancellation is optimized for the office, for planes and for buses or trains. You choose one in the settings.
I tried the headphones surrounded by simulated train and plane noise. The technology works, but it doesn't filter out the external noise completely. It also requires me to press the earpiece deep into my ears to notice a difference.
Sony tells me the earpiece covers come in three sizes, so a larger one might have helped. I look forward to testing the feature more thoroughly.

LG G2 4G LTE variant launched in India at Rs. 46,000

LG has announced the launch of another variant for its flagship G2 smartphone in India. The LG G2 4G LTE variant is priced at Rs. 46,000 for the 16GB variant, and Rs. 49,000 for the 32GB variant. The smartphone will be made available by the company after two weeks (mid-March). LG had first unveiled the G2 3G version in August last year, and it later was launched in India at Rs. 41,500. The 4G LTE version sports same specifications as that of the present LG G2 available in market, apart from the additional 4G LTE support.
The LG G2 features a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080x1920 pixels) display, with a pixel density of 423ppi. It is powered by Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor that's clocked at 2.26GHz. The device comes with 2GB of RAM.
The LG G2 sports a 13-megapixel rear camera with Optical Image Stabilisation and a 2.1-megapixel front shooter. LG's latest flagship runs Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 and is powered by a 3000mAh battery. The LG G2 sports dimensions of 138.5x70.9x8.9mm, weighs 143 grams.
The LG G2 comes with a unique design that features the power buttons and the volume rocker at the back of the phone, below the rear camera, instead of the sides of the phone. It also comes with bezels as thin as 2.65mm.
In February, LG had also unveiled the compact version of the LG G2, called G2 mini, just before MWC 2014. The smartphone is the lighter version of the flagship G2 and features a smaller 4.7-inch IPS LCD display with a qHD (540x960 pixels) resolution.
The G2 mini will feature different chipsets for different variants, with the LTE and 3G versions featuring 1.2GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600 processors - MSM8926 for LTE, and MSM8226 for 3G. The Latin America LTE variant (LATAM LTE) will feature a 1.7GHz Nvidia Tegra 4i chipset.
All variants of the LG G2 mini will also come with a 1GB of RAM. The device's camera options will include an 8-megapixel rear (with flash support) and a 1.3-megapixel front facing shooter. The LATAM LTE variant will feature a 13-megapixel rear camera instead.
The LG G2 mini comes with 8GB of onboard storage with an option for its expandability via microSD card. The device also supports 4G connectivity. The battery capacity of LG G2 mini is 2440mAh.
LG has also planned the India launch of the LG Life Band Touch wristband in second half of 2014, which the company revealed on Monday during their LG Tech Show in India. The fitness tracker wristband was previously unveiled during the CES 2014.
The LG Life Band Touch wristband tracks physical activities such as steps taken, distance covered and calories consumption. The Life Band Touch features an OLED touch display which works as a watch and shows notifications from the connected device.

Microsoft may announce a free version of Windows

As Microsoft plans to wind up Windows 8.1 operating system next month, the firm plans to announce a free version of Windows in a bid to persuade customers to upgrade to latest versions.

A new version, called 'Windows with Bing', could be given away at a developers' conference in April, claimed media reports.

The firm is also rumoured to be considering dropping the price or even giving away its Windows Phone software.

According to media reports, "Microsoft is currently experimenting with a free version of Windows 8.1 that could boost the number of people using the operating system."

Microsoft is building 'Windows 8.1 with Bing' - a version that would have key Microsoft apps and services.

The firm has already made major changes to Windows 8 in a bid to make it more appealing to consumers.

Microsoft hopes the new system would make it easier for touchscreen users and is the same across Microsoft's phones, tablets and PCs.

"Let's make it easier to start applications in the way we are used to," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was quoted as saying in The Verge.

The firm would bring back the start button which can let you boot straight to the desktop, added media reports.

Ballmer also said the firm was not abandoning its start menu, adding that it was slowly beginning to attract app developers to Windows 8.

World's biggest cyberattack detected, 360 million accounts, 1.25 billion email addresses hacked

LONDON: An internet security firm has stumbled upon a "mind boggling" and "Godzilla-sized" cache of personal data put up for sale on the online black market by hackers.

One of the hacker attacks stole over 105 million records making it the single largest data breach in cybercrime history.

The trove included credentials from more than 360 million accounts and around 1.25 billion email addresses.
The discovery was made by cybersecurity firm Hold Security. "These credentials can be stolen directly from your company but also from services in which you and your employees entrust data. In October 2013, Hold Security identified the biggest ever public disclosure of 153 million stolen credentials from Adobe Systems. One month later we identified another large breach of 42 million credentials from Cupid Media," the firm said.
They accumulated the data over the past three weeks. The company first tracked over 300 million abused credentials that were not disclosed publicly (that is over 450 million credentials if one counts the Adobe find).

"But this month we exceeded all expectations. In the first three weeks of February we identified nearly 360 million stolen and abused credentials and 1.25 billion records containing only email addresses. These mind boggling numbers are not meant to scare you and they are a product of multiple breaches which we are independently investigating. This is a call to action," it added.

"The sheer volume is overwhelming," said Alix Holden, chief information security officer of Hold Security.

Hold Security says that the email addresses came from all major providers including Google, Microsoft and Yahoo, and that many non-profit organizations and almost all Fortune 500 companies had been affected.

This comes just months after details of 2.9 million people across the globe were stolen in a highly sophisticated cyberattack on Adobe.

Adobe's security team announced recently that the attackers accessed Adobe customer IDs and encrypted passwords on its systems and removed information including customer names, encrypted credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates and customer orders.

305 നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളെ പരിക്രമണം ചെയ്യുന്നവയാണ് ഈ 715 ഗ്രഹങ്ങള്‍ . 2009 ല്‍ വിക്ഷേപിച്ച കെപ്ലര്‍ ടെലിസ്‌കോപ്പ് ആദ്യ രണ്ടുവര്‍ഷം നടത്തിയ ആകാശനിരീക്ഷണ വിവരങ്ങളില്‍നിന്നാണ് ഇത്രയും ഗ്രഹങ്ങളെ ഗവേഷകര്‍ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞത്.

വിദൂരനക്ഷത്രങ്ങളെ പരിക്രമണം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഭൂമിക്ക് സമാനമായ ഗ്രഹങ്ങളെ തേടിയാണ് 2009 ല്‍ കെപ്ലര്‍ ടെലിസ്‌കോപ്പ് വിക്ഷേപിച്ചത്. മാതൃനക്ഷത്രത്തിന് മുന്നിലൂടെ ഗ്രഹം കടന്നുപോകുമ്പോള്‍ (സംതരണം ചെയ്യുമ്പോള്‍ ) നക്ഷത്രവെളിച്ചത്തിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന മങ്ങല്‍ കണക്കാക്കി ഗ്രഹസാന്നിധ്യം അറിയാനുള്ള സങ്കേതമാണ് കെപ്ലര്‍ പ്രയോഗിച്ചത്.

കഴിഞ്ഞവര്‍ഷം തകരാറിലായ കെപ്ലറിന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണ ഡേറ്റയില്‍നിന്ന് ഇനിയും പുതിയ ഗ്രഹങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിയാനാകുമെന്ന് ഗവേഷകര്‍ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കുന്നു.

ഇതിനുമുമ്പ് സൗരയൂഥത്തിന് വെളിയില്‍ 246 ഗ്രഹങ്ങളെ കെപ്ലാറിന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണം വഴി തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. പുതിയ കണ്ടെത്തലോടെ കെപ്ലര്‍ വഴി തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ അന്യഗ്രഹങ്ങളുടെ ( Exoplanets ) ആകെയെണ്ണം 961 ആയി.

1992 ലാണ് സൗരയൂഥത്തിന് വെളിയില്‍ ഗവേഷകര്‍ ആദ്യമായി ഒരു ഗ്രഹം തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞത്. ഇതുവരെ ആകെ 1800 ഓളം അന്യഗ്രഹങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതില്‍ പകുതിയിലേറെയും കെപ്ലറിന്റെ സംഭാവനയും.

പുതിയതായി തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ 715 ഗ്രഹങ്ങളില്‍ 95 ശതമാനവും നെപ്ട്യൂണിനെക്കാള്‍ വലിപ്പം കുറഞ്ഞവയാണെന്ന് ഗവേഷകര്‍ പറയുന്നു. ഭൂമിയെക്കാള്‍ നാലുമടങ്ങ് വലിപ്പമുള്ളവയാണ് ഏറെയും.

അവയില്‍ നാലെണ്ണം ഭൂമിയെ അപേക്ഷിച്ച് രണ്ടര മടങ്ങ് മാത്രം വലിപ്പമുള്ളവയാണ്. മാത്രമല്ല, മാതൃനക്ഷത്രത്തിനടുത്ത് വെള്ളം ദ്രാവകരൂപത്തില്‍ കാണപ്പെടാന്‍ സാധ്യതയുള്ള 'ആവാസമേഖലയിലാ'ണ് ആ നാലുഗ്രഹങ്ങളും സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്നതെന്നും നാസയുടെ വാര്‍ത്താക്കുറിപ്പ് പറയുന്നു.

ഈ പഠനത്തിന്റെ ഒന്നാമത്തെ പ്രത്യേകത, ഇത്രയും പുതിയ ഗ്രഹങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞ കാര്യം ഇതിനുമുമ്പ് ഒരിക്കലും ഒറ്റയടിക്ക് പ്രഖ്യാപിച്ചിട്ടില്ല എന്നതാണ് - നാസയിലെ ഗവേഷകന്‍ ഡഗ്ലാസ് ഹ്യൂഡ്ഗിന്‍സ് അറിയിച്ചു.

രണ്ടാമത്തെ പ്രത്യേകത, നമ്മുടെ സൗരയൂഥംപോലെ മാതൃനക്ഷത്രത്തെ ഒന്നിലധികം ഗ്രഹങ്ങള്‍ പരിക്രമണം ചെയ്യുന്ന ഗ്രഹസംവിധാനങ്ങള്‍ ആകാശഗംഗയില്‍ സുലഭമാണ് എന്നകാര്യം ഇത് വ്യക്തമാക്കുന്നു.

മൂന്നാമത്തെ സവിശേഷത, നെപ്ട്യൂണിനും ഭൂമിക്കും മധ്യേ വലിപ്പമുള്ള ചെറിയ ഗ്രഹങ്ങളാണ് പുതിയതായി തിരിച്ചറിഞ്ഞവയില്‍ ബഹുഭൂരിപക്ഷവും എന്നതാണ്.

നൂറുകണക്കിന് പ്രകാശവര്‍ഷമകലെ സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന നക്ഷത്രത്തിന് മുന്നിലൂടെ ഗ്രഹം കടന്നുപോകുമ്പോള്‍ നക്ഷത്രത്തിളക്കത്തിലുണ്ടാകുന്ന ഏറ്റക്കുറച്ചില്‍ പലപ്പോഴും തെറ്റായി വ്യാഖ്യാനിക്കപ്പെടാറുണ്ട്. അതിനാല്‍ , കെപ്ലാര്‍ രേഖപ്പെടുത്തിയ വിവരങ്ങള്‍ വിശകലനം ചെയ്ത് ഗ്രഹങ്ങളെ തിരിച്ചറിയുക വളരെ സങ്കീര്‍ണമായ പ്രവര്‍ത്തനമാണ്.

More Nokia X Android smartphones on the way despite Microsoft deal

While most were surprised by Nokia's move to release an Android-based smartphone given the impending acquisition of its mobile phone business by Microsoft, the Finnish mobile giant insists it's business as usual.

Jussi Nevanlinna, Vice President for Mobile Phone marketing for Nokia, answered a series of questions, including one that directly addressed the 'strange' timing of the announcement.

"I can't speak on Microsoft's behalf; what I can say is our strategy with Mobile Phones has been, and remains, connecting the next billion," said Nevanlinna. "Microsoft is equally focussed on 'mobile first; cloud first'."

Nokia believes that the Android-based X platform is one approach to compete in the affordable smartphone market. Nokia not only plans to release more Nokia X smartphones, it is also aiming for lower price points. The company says there's no competition with Lumia phones, since the Nokia X series is targeted at consumers who can't afford Lumia devices.

"Lumia remains our primary smartphone platform and we continue to push the prices down, Nokia X addresses price points that are generally lower than those reached by Lumia, and we'll keep pushing the Nokia X prices down even further, " Nevanlinna added.

With Nokia X family, the company is targeting customers who are now aspiring to get a smartphone. Nokia has given expected launch dates of Nokia X phones in Asia-Pacific, Europe, India, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa, but until now there has been been no word on when the phones will reach the more 'developed' markets. Nevanlinnak spilled the beans during the interview, answering with a big 'No'.

"These are global products, which will be available pretty much everywhere except North America, Korea and Japan."

The company's logic here is that it wants to look towards the emerging markets, which are seeing this big shift from feature phones to affordable smartphones. So the markets like India, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, South America, Brazil, and Mexico, amongst others, are on Nokia's list.

Nokia X, which is based on Google's Android Open Source Project, has a few other 'enhancements' on top that, the company believes, make it perfect for emerging markets. For example, the Nokia In-App Payment, which offers in-app payments through operator billing is ideal for emerging markets where credit card penetration is still very low. Nokia says it has tied-up with a large number of telecom operators around the world, so the infrastructure is already in place.
